On this solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, the Church invites us to contemplate the Eucharistic mystery, the heart of our faith and the source of our communion with the Lord. Following the Easter celebrations, this feast offers us the opportunity to rekindle our gratitude for the ineffable gift Jesus left us: His real presence under the species of bread and wine.
On the evening of Holy Thursday, Christ instituted the Eucharist, saying: “Do this in memory of me”. This command is not limited to mere remembrance; it makes present His redemptive sacrifice and unites us to it. Today, the Church confirms this sacramental presence. By receiving the Body and Blood of Christ, we affirm that our life is rooted in Him, ‘the eternal Rock .
The first reading presents Melchizedek, king and priest, a prefiguration of Christ. He embodies a universal priesthood, not dependent on Levitical lineage. The Letter to the Hebrews sees in this the announcement of the Son’s priesthood, “established not according to a carnal law but by the power of an indestructible life.” Thus, the Eucharist fulfills the new covenant, sealed in the Spirit.
In the second reading, St. Paul recalls the institution of the Eucharist, emphasizing its sacrificial and communal nature. Every Mass unites us to Calvary and anticipates the heavenly banquet. Far from being a formal rite, it commits us to live as the “Body of Christ” in charity and unity.
The Gospel describes Jesus feeding the crowd with five loaves and two fish. This miracle reveals His compassion and foreshadows the Eucharist, where He truly gave Himself as food. The disciples, initially perplexed, later become instruments of His grace. Likewise, the Church is called to share the gifts received, trusting in divine abundance.
Thus, the Eucharist is both promise and reality: “a pledge of eternal life”. May we, like the disciples of Emmaus, recognize Christ in the breaking of the bread and bear witness to His presence until the glory of the face-to-face encounter.
