VIII Sunday of Ordinary Time

“Being sincere and consistent with ourselves and with others”

The readings for this Sunday invite us to reflect on the importance of coherence between our words and our actions, as a reflection of who we truly are.

The Book of Sirach highlights the significance of words. It warns us that “a person’s speech discloses the cultivation of the mind”, and therefore, we must be very careful with what we say and fully aware of the words we utter!

The sieve, the furnace, reflection, and the fruit of the tree are images that help us understand what truly holds meaning. Wisdom does not come merely from what we do or feel; wisdom comes from the depths of our being. That is why words of wisdom are worth their weight in gold.

Indeed, words are essential in human life because they express our feelings and desires; love and hatred; truth and lies; encouragement and slander.

In the Gospel (Luke 6:39-45), Jesus speaks to us about the blind leading the blind, about the speck we see in our brother’s eye while failing to notice the beam in our own.

The image is very clear: Jesus speaks to us about “fraternal correction”, through which we help our brother.

Before correcting others, do I humbly and honestly examine myself first?

Jesus also teaches that a tree is judged by its fruit. He reminds us that no tree can produce a fruit different from its essence and that each one is recognized by its fruit:
“A good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.”

This highlights the importance of having a good heart in order to speak good words. Jesus tells us that our actions reflect what is within us. He reminds us that “from the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks”, and He invites us to imitate the mercy of the Father.

What should we hold in our hearts? Mercy, kindness, compassion, humility… From these flow the fruits of our lives, which others may gather.

A profound example of coherence between faith and life is Saint Francis Coll. His life was a testimony of love and dedication to God and to others, and his words and actions reflected the authenticity of his faith.

In our daily lives, it is good to practice sincerity and take time to reflect on the consistency between our words and actions. Let us live and share the Gospel with coherence and authenticity.
