GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY
WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS
The Church reminds us of “Good Shepherd Sunday”: Jesus who walks with us, accompanies us—sometimes ahead, sometimes beside, and sometimes behind… “He calls his own sheep by name… he goes before them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice” (Jn 10:3-4).
He offers a clear vision of where the community is heading. He organizes the search for paths, setting a rhythm that revives hope, not exhaustion. He uses a recognizable voice, grounded in integrity, perseverance, and fidelity. Following Jesus means recognizing his voice among strangers, highlighting freedom and trust in Him who guides and walks ahead of the sheep.
Pope Leo XIV tells us in his message for this Sunday, under the theme “THE INNER DISCOVERY OF GOD’S GIFT”, that this is a moment of grace to pray and reflect on the inner dynamic of vocation as a free gift from God. Let us walk the path of a truly beautiful life that Jesus, the Good Shepherd, shows us: the path of beauty.
In the Gospel of John, Jesus presents himself as the “Beautiful Shepherd.” He refers to a perfect, authentic, exemplary shepherd who is willing to lay down his life for his sheep, thus revealing God’s love.
He is the Shepherd who captivates: whoever looks at Him discovers that life is truly beautiful if one follows Him. To perceive this beauty, bodily eyes or aesthetic criteria are not enough; contemplation and interiority are needed. Whoever pauses, listens, prays, and welcomes His gaze can say with confidence: “I trust; with Him life is beautiful.” As His disciples, we become beautiful; His beauty transforms us.
The mark that distinguishes the saints, beyond goodness, is the radiant spiritual beauty that shines from those who live in Christ the Good Shepherd. We must care for our interior life as a space of relationship with Jesus, as a path to experience God’s goodness in our own lives. This relationship is built in prayer and silence, opening us to receive and live the gift of vocation as a project of love and fidelity.
If our communities shine with living faith, constant prayer, and fraternal communion, God’s call will arise and mature, becoming a path of salvation for each person and for the world.
The Lord of life knows us and enlightens our hearts with His loving gaze. Every vocation arises from the awareness and experience of a God who is Love. We must cultivate firm and steadfast trust in God’s promises, without falling into despair, overcoming fears and uncertainties with the certainty that the Risen One is Lord of the history of the world and of our personal history.
Pope Leo encourages us to deepen our personal relationship with Jesus the Good Shepherd through daily prayer, meditation on the Word of God, the Eucharist, and adoration.
May the Virgin Mary, model of interior openness to the divine gift and teacher of prayerful listening, always accompany us on our journey.
