John 11:17–27
In this Gospel passage, Jesus arrives in Bethany to find that his friend Lazarus has already died. Martha, grieving, says:
“Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
Yet even in her sorrow, she keeps her faith: she believes that God can still bring life out of loss. Then Jesus says words that reach far beyond that moment:
“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, even though they die, will live.”
This story speaks not only of physical resurrection but of hope stronger than death. In Christ, life does not end—it is transformed. Where the world sees an ending, God creates a new beginning.
We all live moments like Martha’s—times of pain, absence, and questioning. Faith does not erase suffering, but it brings light. Jesus invites us to trust that His love is greater than death, and that what is lived in love endures forever.
On this Commemoration of All Souls, we proclaim that our departed live in God, the source of life and love. May our prayer renew our trust in His promise:
“Whoever believes in me will never die.”
In every ending, God’s love still breathes, and in every heart that loves and hopes, eternity is already alive.
