Jesus confronts our human logic, so often centered on seeking honors, prestige, or immediate rewards. Instead, He opens for us the path of humility, of selfless service, and of welcoming those who cannot give us anything in return.
This Gospel places us before two very human attitudes:
- Seeking recognition and prestige. Many times, without realizing it, we want to be “in the first places,” to receive the approval of others, to stand out above the rest. Jesus teaches us that the path of the Kingdom does not pass through ambition or honors, but through humility and service.
- Giving while expecting something in return. In our society, it is common that acts of help are tied to reciprocity: “I give to you because you can give back to me.” Jesus breaks this logic and invites us to live in gratuity: to serve and to love even those who cannot repay us, because God Himself will be our reward.
The Gospel this Sunday is an invitation to rediscover that true joy is found in giving without expecting anything, in welcoming our brother as a gift from God, and in proclaiming the Good News with simplicity—living by contemplating Christ’s humility so that we may preach with our lives the Father’s selfless love.
Being humble is not lowering oneself, but recognizing the truth of who we are: creatures in need of God and brothers and sisters to one another.
Gratuity makes us free: when we give without expecting anything, we draw closer to the way God loves, because He gives without measure.
The call is to examine our motivations: do I seek recognition, or do I seek to serve? Do I give to receive something, or out of true love? Jesus shows us the way…
