This is how I can express the experience before Pope Francis’ tomb.
The Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome received the mortal remains of Pope Francis according to the arrangements he himself had requested. It reflects utmost sobriety and simplicity, and is a deep and meaningful SILENT invitation to become aware of and value the radiant presence of Christ in all moments of life—and also in death.
Simplicity and sobriety for a man who lived the evangelical freedom of one who knows in WHOM he has placed his trust.
Before reaching the tomb of Francis, our Shepherd and Guide, we passed the image of the Virgin Queen of Peace. A deeply expressive image that moves those who seek and wish to understand where God is, where our Mother Mary is, in the face of so much suffering and senseless death. War, violence, manipulation, exclusion… With her raised hand and expressive face, Mary lifts a silent cry: ENOUGH!
After Francis’ tomb, we find the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows: Salus Populi Romani – Protector of the Roman People – before whom the Pope used to pray before his papal visits and journeys.
Silence and austerity stand in contrast to the large crowd of pilgrim believers in this Jubilee of Hope, and to the tourists… The tomb of Francis is a silent and eloquent preaching.
We pray for him, we ask his intercession for all humanity, for PEACE!
