Today, as we celebrate Saints Peter and Paul, we celebrate the pillars of the Church. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, they brought the Gospel to Jews and Gentiles, living a vibrant and active faith unto martyrdom. The readings show how God acts: through prayer, through faith, and through fidelity.
In the first reading, Peter is miraculously freed thanks to the powerful intercession of the Church. Thus, amidst our trials, confident prayer through bold faith and perseverance is effective. With God, the impossible becomes possible.
In his letter to Timothy, Saint Paul announces that his hour is near. He affirms having been faithful to his mission, supported by God throughout his life. Despite trials, he persevered in faith and hope to merit a divine reward. For him, faith is lived in the offering of his life.
The Gospel according to Saint Matthew reports Peter’s profession of faith and the mission Jesus entrusts to him to guide his Church. Christ’s question: “Who do you say that I am?” directed to Peter, remains relevant and addresses each of us today. To answer it, we must express an authentic and personal faith before Jesus, opening our hearts and allowing him to transform our existence. The Lord expects us to manifest our faith and love in our daily lives. Like Peter and Paul, our faith must be alive and translate not only into words but also into actions, for, according to Saint James, faith without works is dead.
What these readings teach us is that we are all called to proclaim the Gospel, not only with words but also with actions. The fervent faith of Peter and Paul, their passion for Christ, and their strength in trial did not stem solely from their human abilities but from God, who chose and sent them. Likewise, we are invited not to fear failure or difficulties but to seek help from the Lord. To those who rely on Him, God grants the grace and strength necessary to remain faithful. Our true pride lies in perseverance and fidelity in the service of God.
May Saints Peter and Paul intercede for us, that we may allow ourselves to be transformed and guided by the Holy Spirit, and that we may become, wherever we are, tireless witnesses of the Good News.
