Hope is not the absence of difficulties, but the certainty that God walks with us

Often, hope is equated with mere optimism, the promise of better days, or the inevitable fulfilment of our aspirations. However, the theological virtue of hope transcends human hope, as it is rooted in absolute trust in God. It is not based on favourable circumstances or the absence of trials, since difficulties and suffering are inherent in the human condition. Whether it be illnesses, grief, material losses, conflicts, or crises, pain is a reality that every human being faces. But God does not remain indifferent to our sorrows; He is fully committed to our side, for He says, “I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). This divine promise transcends the vicissitudes of life, as the psalmist expresses: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4). For us Christians, trials become an act of faith, an invitation to look beyond immediate circumstances and to believe firmly that God is at work even in the heart of suffering. “More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame” (Romans 5:3-5). Thus, in the midst of trials, we can experience a peace and strength that emanates from the divine presence, “a peace that surpasses all understanding” (Philippians 4:7). This peace is the fruit of an intimate and profound relationship with God.

However, hope is not experienced solely on an individual level; it also flourishes within the community of believers, that is, the Church. We are called to bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2), to encourage each other, and to support those going through difficult times. Fraternity provides a special space where hope is strengthened, where each person finds comfort and encouragement in their walk with God.

We are invited to consider our trials as opportunities for growth and witness, in order to become artisans of faith, hope, and charity for our brothers and sisters in humanity. Whatever difficulties we face, let us always keep in mind that our hope is anchored in the constant presence of a loving God who accompanies us at every moment of our existence. May Our Lady of Hope sustain us in our tribulations and guide us towards the light of Christ.
