Luke 17:5-10
In our present context, this passage can be read as a small “instruction manual” from Jesus for those who feel their faith is not enough, especially when facing the challenges of community life, in the Church or in ministry.
Jesus uses the image of a servant working for his master to teach that disciples are called to fulfill their responsibilities without seeking recognition or gratitude. The teaching culminates in the statement: “We are unworthy servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.”
The Gospel highlights two fundamental lessons:
- The power of faith, even when small. Authentic faith can transform reality and open space for God’s action.
- The necessity of humble service. Serving is not a way to earn rewards, but a generous response to God’s call.
The disciples’ request – “Increase our faith” – receives from Jesus the reminder that faith is not about quantity but about trust and availability. Its strength does not come from human merit but from divine grace.
God, who is Love, sustains us with His grace at every moment. He invites us to live with humility, being instruments of life, peace, and joy for others.
