On December 17, within the season of Advent, we celebrate O Sapientia – O Wisdom, invoking Christ as the source of understanding and discernment who guides humanity. This antiphon invites us to reflect on the importance of knowledge and education, not only as personal goods, but as tools for social transformation.
Wisdom, in the biblical tradition, is manifested as a gift that guides life and promotes the common good. The Book of Proverbs reminds us: “Wisdom cries out in the streets; she raises her voice in the public squares” (Pr 1:20), teaching us that wisdom is neither private nor elitist; it is meant for everyone, especially those who seek justice, peace, and integral human growth. Likewise, Jesus, the Incarnate Word, invites us to live according to truth and knowledge: “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (Jn 8:32). Education, therefore, is a path toward freedom and human dignity.
Promoting education is not limited to schools or classrooms; it is a social commitment that embraces all ages and contexts. Literacy programs, reading campaigns, and support for vulnerable communities allow wisdom to become present in the lives of those who need it most. Every child who learns to read, every young person who discovers new ideas, every adult who receives educational support becomes an agent of change capable of transforming their family and community.
Today, December 17, O Sapientia reminds us that education and knowledge are seeds of justice, peace, and solidarity. Just as wisdom cries out in the public squares, we are called to ensure that the Word and knowledge reach every corner, especially those most in need, making education a true instrument of social and human transformation.
