In Advent, the “O” Antiphons remind us of different attributes of Christ that illuminate our life and mission. Today, December 19, we celebrate O Radix Jesse – O Root of Jesse, which invites us to contemplate Jesus as the root of David and all reconciled humanity, and to reflect on the importance of family and intergenerational bonds as spaces for transmitting values and faith.
The Bible reminds us that the family is the first place where we learn to live in community, to love, and to respect: “Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God gives you” (Exodus 20:12). This teaching emphasizes the importance of respecting and valuing our elders, recognizing that they are bearers of wisdom and experience. Moreover, Jesus’ genealogy in the Gospel of Matthew (Mt 1:1-17) shows us how the history of salvation is built through generations: each family, each bond is a thread in God’s plan.
Strengthening family bonds and dialogue between generations is therefore an act of justice and love. The root of Jesse symbolizes the continuity of life, the transmission of values, and the hope renewed in every generation. Families that communicate, support each other, and visit one another create an environment where children learn respect, young people find guidance, and elders feel valued and heard.
O Radix Jesse reminds us that Jesus is born into a family, and that the family is the first school of love and faith transmission. Today, every action that builds strong intergenerational ties is a way to prepare our hearts and society to receive the Savior. As Psalm 78 says, “We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done” (Psalm 78:4). Strengthening the family is strengthening the hope and future of our community.
