O Oriens: Light and hope for those living in darkness

Dec 21, 2025 | News

On December 21, during the “O” Days of Advent, we celebrate O Oriens – O Rising Sun / East, recognizing Christ as the light that illuminates darkness and brings hope to those going through poverty, exclusion, or suffering. This antiphon reminds us that God does not remain distant from the needs of His people; His light guides us to accompany and transform the lives of the most vulnerable.

The Bible speaks of light as a symbol of salvation and hope: “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light” (Is 9:1). Jesus Himself calls us to be bearers of that light: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden” (Matt 5:14). Light not only illuminates our own path but also invites us to bring clarity, comfort, and opportunities to those living in the darkness of need or exclusion.

Giving hope means acting with solidarity and closeness. Every act of support for those in need—accompanying the homeless, distributing food, assisting those living in poverty, or participating in inclusion programs—allows the light of Christ to reach their lives. Mercy, attentive listening, and concrete help are ways to reflect the light of the Rising Sun in our community.

O Oriens reminds us that Christ is the light announcing a new day full of opportunities and reconciliation. Psalm 112 tells us: “The light of the upright shines in the darkness; he is gracious, merciful, and righteous” (Ps 112:4). Every action we take to illuminate the lives of others reflects God’s love and makes us instruments of hope.

As we celebrate O Oriens, we are invited to be light in our family, community, and society, offering accompaniment, justice, and closeness to those who need it most. May the light of the Rising Sun inspire our actions and transform darkness into hope for all.
