On December 23, during the “O” Days of Advent, we celebrate O Emmanuel – O God with us, remembering that Christ is present in the lives of all, especially those who suffer and need companionship. This antiphon invites us to reflect on the importance of accompanying the most vulnerable and being a supportive presence in the lives of others, following the example of Jesus.
The Bible reminds us that closeness and service to others is a way of recognizing God in our lives: “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matt 25:40). Being Emmanuel means living concrete solidarity and love, becoming witnesses of God’s presence amid suffering and need.
The prophet Isaiah also speaks of a God who is near: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel” (Is 7:14). Christ is born to be with us, and His presence inspires us not to remain indifferent to the difficulties of others. Every gesture of support, companionship, and care reflects God’s closeness and helps build more humane and fraternal communities.
Promoting solidarity can take the form of visiting the sick or lonely, accompanying those living in poverty, participating in volunteer programs, or assisting vulnerable people. These actions allow the hope and love of Christ to reach those who need it most, making His presence tangible in our world.
O Emmanuel reminds us that God is with us at all times. As Psalm 46 says: “God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her at break of day” (Ps 46:5). Every act of accompaniment and closeness to others reflects this divine presence and allows us to be instruments of peace, comfort, and hope.
As we celebrate O Emmanuel, we are invited to open our hearts and hands, recognizing Christ in every person in need and turning our solidarity into a true testimony of His love and closeness.
