In Advent, the O Antiphon “O Adonai – Oh Lord” reminds us that Christ is the true Lord, guide of our lives, and a model of just and responsible leadership. This day invites us to reflect on how we exercise authority and to promote respect for moral and communal authority as the foundation of a more just society.
The Bible offers clear teachings on ethical leadership and responsible service. Micah tells us: “He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you? Only to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). Just leadership does not seek power for itself, but the protection of the weak, the promotion of equity, and the building of the common good. Jesus Himself taught a style of leadership based on service: “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant” (Matt 20:26). Being a leader means guiding with humility and putting the interests of others above one’s own.
In a world where authority is often exercised without ethics or respect, it is urgent to form responsible and committed leaders. Promoting justice and honesty in all areas of life—family, school, work, and community—is an act of social transformation. Teaching young people to lead ethically allows them to positively influence their environment, defending truth and fairness.
O Adonai reminds us that Jesus is Lord and guide. His example teaches us that true authority is exercised with justice, service, and love. As Proverbs states: “The one who leads with integrity will be honored, but the wicked will fall because of their evil” (Prov 28:28). Today, by invoking Christ as Adonai, we commit ourselves to lead responsibly, to respect moral authority, and to build more just and humane societies.
