A response to the needs of his time

The Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of the Anunciata was founded in the mid-19th century in response to the religious, educational and social needs of the time.

Its founder, Saint Francisco Coll i Guitart, a religious of the Order of Preachers, discovered during his missions throughout towns and villages that dechristianization was one of the main causes of social difficulties and the loss of Gospel values.

He encountered a lack of access to education, especially for girls, and believed that the education of women was a priority and of great importance for the well-being of families and society as a whole.

At the same time, he became aware of the desire of many young women who felt called to a religious vocation and wished to consecrate their lives to God through service to others, but lacked the financial resources necessary to enter the existing religious congregations.

After a profound process of prayer, reflection and discernment, he understood that God was calling him to found a new congregation dedicated to evangelization through education.

Thus, on 15 August 1856, in Vic (Catalonia, Spain), he brought together the first young women who gave rise to the Dominican Sisters of the Anunciata. Despite the difficulties of the early years, Saint Francisco Coll remained firmly convinced that this was a work willed by God, destined to transform society through the proclamation of the Gospel.

A mission that began in 1856

Saint Francisco Coll lived his vocation as a Dominican religious and preacher in a century marked by great changes and upheaval, the 19th century. Despite having reasons for discouragement, hopelessness and sorrow, he was a fulfilled and joyful religious, because his inner life was deeply rooted in God, the One who gives meaning to life. As a contemplative man, he knew how to look beyond what was immediately visible and discover that God was calling him to a great mission.

Saint Francisco Coll saw the reality of young women and girls with no prospects for the future, and of women who were marginalized in the formation and education of his time. He saw what others did not see. Attentive to the voice of the Holy Spirit and discerning during his long hours of prayer, he gradually discovered how to respond to those challenges and decided to found a Congregation with a clear purpose: “To proclaim the message of salvation to all, especially children and young people, through education.”

On 15 August 1856, Fr Coll brought together seven young women in Vic. Thus was born the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of the Anunciata, in a borrowed house and with only the bare necessities, but with great generosity, courage and complete trust in God’s help.

Voices of opposition and criticism arose against Fr Coll and those seven young women. Some friends tried to convince him not to continue, but Saint Francisco Coll, entrusting the new Congregation into God’s hands, stated with certainty: “Yes, yes, the Anunciata is the work of God.”

In 1857, as the number of postulants and novices increased, Fr Coll raised enough money through his preaching to purchase a house with a garden in Vic. This became the first house of the Dominican Sisters of the Anunciata and the Motherhouse of the Congregation, as it is still known today.

As founder of the Dominican Sisters of the Anunciata, Father Coll took care of both the material needs and the spiritual life of the Congregation. He neglected nothing in his role as father and founder. He soon had the support of his closest collaborator, Sister Rosa Santaeugenia, who became his right-hand woman and the first Prioress General of the Congregation of the Anunciata.

More than 170 years after their foundation, the Dominican Sisters of the Anunciata continue to proclaim the Gospel and accompany people with hope, closeness and a spirit of service. The mission of the Dominican Sisters of the Anunciata continues to respond to today’s challenges through education, evangelization, human development and a commitment to justice, peace and care for creation.

The Dominican Sisters of the Anunciata continue to bring Saint Francisco Coll’s dream to life: to proclaim the Gospel and bring the light of Christ wherever it is most needed. Faithful to the charism of Saint Francisco Coll, the sisters are present today in 22 countries and in diverse cultural and social contexts, accompanying children, young people, families and communities through closeness, attentive listening, welcome and service.

The Congregation responds to the challenges of our time through education and evangelization, human development and pastoral accompaniment, seeking to contribute to a more humane, fraternal and supportive society. Its mission is carried out in schools, communities, social projects and pastoral settings, always placing the dignity of every person at the heart of its work.

In the face of realities such as poverty, inequality, conflict, loneliness and exclusion, the Dominican Sisters of the Anunciata renew their commitment to justice, peace and the defence of the most vulnerable. They also promote care for creation and simpler, more responsible ways of living.

The Anunciata continues a story woven by God, inviting us to remain a light, a source of hope and a caring presence at the service of the Gospel and of others.
