The Gospel of Luke, beyond dogmas and rituals, offers us a striking story told by Jesus: that of the rich man and poor Lazarus (Lk 16:19\u201331). For me, as a believer who lives faith in a personal way, this passage is not just a religious lesson, but a mirror that Jesus places before our society and our own conscience. It is an invitation to reflect on our priorities and on how we live our faith in everyday life.<\/span><\/p>\n A World of Contrasts. <\/b>The parable begins by presenting two characters who represent completely opposite worlds. On one side, a rich man who lives in opulence, without his name ever being mentioned. This anonymity, to me, symbolizes his lack of relationship with others and, perhaps, with God. On the other side, Lazarus, a poor man lying at the rich man\u2019s gate, covered with sores. His name, which means \u201cGod helps,\u201d is especially meaningful. It reminds us of a fundamental truth: human dignity does not depend on material wealth.<\/span><\/p>\n The most tragic aspect of this story is not that one is rich and the other poor, but the complete indifference of the rich man toward Lazarus. It is as if Lazarus were invisible. The rich man is so enclosed in his bubble of luxury and banquets that he does not see the suffering right at his door. The problem was not his wealth itself, but the way he lived it: it isolated him, hardened his heart, and distanced him from compassion.<\/span><\/p>\n A Turning Point: Death Makes Us Equal. <\/b>Death radically changes the situation: Lazarus is welcomed and rewarded, while the rich man ends up in a place of torment. Now it is he who begs for help, at least a drop of water to refresh himself. This reversal of destinies is not a mere divine punishment but the logical consequence of life\u2019s choices. The rich man had many opportunities to be supportive and compassionate, but he ignored them. The door of mercy was open to him, but he closed it through his indifference.<\/span><\/p>\n The Word Is Enough. <\/b>The final dialogue between the rich man and Abraham is, for me, the most important part of the parable. The rich man asks that his brothers be warned, so they will not end up like him. But Abraham\u2019s answer is firm: \u201cThey have Moses and the prophets; let them listen to them.\u201d In other words, they already have the Word of God, the teachings that show the path of love and charity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This parable invites us to a very personal reflection. Attending Mass every Sunday and praying is valuable, but it is not enough if it does not lead us to become better people. The Gospel calls us to open our eyes and hearts, to see those who need us, and to live our faith not as a theory, but as an action.<\/span><\/p>\n Where Do I Find Myself in This Story? <\/b>This parable leads me to a deep and uncomfortable personal reflection: Am I the rich man in this story? Am I so enclosed in my comforts and concerns that I fail to see the needs right beside me? Or am I Lazarus, who trusts that, despite suffering, there is dignity and meaning in life? Life is not as simple as being one or the other; often we carry something of both within us. We have moments of wealth \u2014not only material, but also of well-being, health, or relationships\u2014 and also moments of vulnerability. What matters most is how we respond to each situation with faith and charity, and what we do with these opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n This story from Luke is not presented only as a doctrinal truth, but as an invitation to live faith in an authentic way: to open my eyes and heart to the reality around me, to realize that the Word of God is not only in an ancient book but manifests itself in my conscience, in the small acts of charity I can do each day, and in the ability to see others not as a burden but as brothers and sisters. We do not need to wait for miracles or extraordinary signs to understand this; the Word of God and an open conscience are already enough.
